Matthew Shlomowitz’s new commission sits alongside three works from Sound and Music-shortlisted composers and a new piece from talented Irish composer Ryan Molloy. Contemporary classics complete the programme: three of Sciarrino’s quicksilver madrigals, and In dir, Gervasoni’s substantial setting of Angelus Silesius.

The timeless space of Morton Feldman’s music is explored in his iconic Clarinet and String Quartet, alongside shorter pieces Only and Voices and Cello. We pair this up with two new commissions by composers inspired by Feldman – Andrew Hamilton and James Weeks.

Sizewell is a tenacious coastal village which has survived through its kaleidoscopic relationship to the sea. Fishing and smuggling were succeeded 50 years ago by the Magnox reactor, which drew in sea water as a natural and abundant coolant.

In an open air performance culminating with Ligeti’s extraordinary Lux Aeterna, featuring sound and projection design and music that spans five centuries, director Netia Jones and EXAUDI create in Sizewell a meditation on light, energy, the collapse of time and the fabric of the entire universe – and our extraordinary and ambitious methods of survival within it.
