Pocket Universe brings together four works commissioned and premiered by EXAUDI between 2013 and 2019 through the ensemble’s EXPOSURE showcase, capturing the remarkable artistic relationships the ensemble has forged with some of the most distinctive compositional voices working today.

Cassandra Miller‘s Guide weaves a Southern Baptist Hymn into ecstatic vocal loops; Andrew Hamilton’s glitched repetitions in Proclamation of the Republic lead a hysterical path through the text of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic; Leo Chadburn explores the sentimentality of the holiday postcard with gentle irony in Affix Stamp Here; and Geoff Hannan’s Pocket Universe condenses the cosmic speculation of Galileo and Newton into an obsessive and virtuosic tour-de-force.

The Chromatic Renaissance is a journey into the heart of a forgotten musical revolution. Beginning in 16th-century Italy, composer-theorists like Nicola Vicentino shattered the limits of conventional harmony, dividing the scale into 31 equal notes – not just the usual 12. These revolutionary ideas resulted in intricate microtonal madrigals and highly chromatic works that challenged musical boundaries and delighted ambitious princes and patrons alike.

These masterpieces paved the way for composers like Carlo Gesualdo, Cipriano de Rore, Luca Marenzio and Orlando di Lasso, whose works remain some of the most emotionally intense and sophisticated music of the era.

Since 2017, EXAUDI has been at the forefront of reviving this extraordinary music. To our knowledge, our residency at Aldeburgh Music in 2017 marked the first time in modern history that a vocal ensemble has sung Vicentino’s microtonal works unaccompanied. EXAUDI is still the only ensemble regularly exploring this incredible and fiendishly difficult music.

EXAUDI is grateful to Angel Early Music for their generous support of this recording.

A suite of German motets, steeped in the music of Heinrich Schütz and the poetry of Martin Opitz. A winsome English partsong, setting Shakespeare’s contemporary Edmund Spenser; three angular Italian madrigals intercutting Gramsci with Dante; and an experimental score on a text of Yeats. A thrilling whirlwind of vocal sound, scattering syllables from Wordsworth’s Prelude like dead leaves in a Cumbrian gale. Such are the bewilderingly diverse vocal works on this album, EXAUDI‘s third dedicated to the music of English composer Christopher Fox.

Book of Flames and Shadows is a continuous sequence of music lasting about an hour, incorporating two pieces by James Weeks and madrigals by Jacques Arcadelt (1507-68). Its theme is the discovering, or awakening, of the sensual and erotic power of the spoken word, and its transformation into song, through the love poetry of Petrarch (1304-74) and his later imitators, including Pietro Bembo (1470-1547).
