Chromatic Renaissance Kickstarter Launched

We’re raising money to bring one of the most challenging and emotionally intense strands of Renaissance music to life.  Since 2017, we’ve been performing our acclaimed Chromatic Renaissance programme across Europe, and now we need your support to record this unique repertoire.

What is the Chromatic Renaissance?

The Chromatic Renaissance is a journey into the heart of a forgotten musical revolution. Beginning in 16th-century Italy, composer-theorists like Nicola Vicentino shattered the limits of conventional harmony, dividing the scale into 31 equal notes – not just the usual 12. These revolutionary ideas resulted in intricate microtonal madrigals and highly chromatic works that challenged musical boundaries and delighted ambitious princes and patrons alike.

These masterpieces paved the way for composers like Carlo Gesualdo, Cipriano de Rore, Luca Marenzio and Orlando di Lasso, whose works remain some of the most emotionally intense and sophisticated music of the era. Now, EXAUDI is bringing these works back to life.

EXAUDI’s Chromatic Renaissance Programme

Since 2017, EXAUDI has been at the forefront of reviving this extraordinary music. To our knowledge, our residency at Aldeburgh Music in 2017 marked the first time in modern history that a vocal ensemble has sung Vicentino’s microtonal works a cappella, and we’ve since performed our programme at Wigmore Hall, Durham, Wien Modern festival and the Berlin Festspiele.

EXAUDI is still the only ensemble regularly exploring this incredible music live. Our deep understanding of chromatic music makes us the perfect group to record this repertoire, and we’re ready to create the definitive recordings that will ensure this music is accessible to listeners for generations.

Why Your Support Matters

We’ve already secured a generous grant from Angel Early Music, but we still need to raise £6,000 to make this recording possible.

Your donation will help us:

  • Capture this music in its purest form – the recording will be made at the stunning Orford Church in Suffolk, known for its exceptional acoustics.
  • Support a pioneering musical project – we believe that we’re the only group in the world doing this kind of work, and we want to bring this astonishing music to the widest possible audience.
  • Make a difference in the cultural landscape – these pieces have never been recorded before, and your contribution will ensure they reach listeners everywhere.

How You Can Help

Be part of bringing something truly ground-breaking into the world. Your pledge will help us achieve a recording that will be remembered for years to come.

We can’t do this without you. Help us reach our goal and bring this stunning, unheard music to the people who need to hear it.

Thank you for being a part of this extraordinary project.
